Climate change is shrinking Australian plant leaves

If your plan for escaping climate change is to hide in the shade of a tree, you might be out of luck. It turns out the leaves of some plants are shrinking in response to the warmer weather.

But bad news for shade-lovers may be good news for plant conservation. The changes could indicate that plants are evolving rapidly to changing conditions, suggesting they have a better chance at survival.

"Often we consider that climate change is something that is going to happen in the future," says Andrew Lowe, a plant conservation biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia and a key investigator on the study. "But we've already seen substantial changes in the Earth's climate and so we should expect that there have been changes to the Earth's plants."

While earlier studies have observed climate-change-induced alterations in plant's flowering time and animal migration patterns, this is the first evidence of changes to plant shape, Lowe says.

Analysing about 500 historic and new samples of a type of Dodonaea viscosa ? an Australian shrub in the Lychee family ? Lowe and colleagues found average leaf width has shrunk by 2 millimetres, or 40 per cent, over the past 127 years.

Across the region, the northerly, warmer areas tend to have plants with wider leaves on average. A narrowing of leaf width of 2 millimetres is equivalent to a difference in latitude of 300 kilometres.

Ray of hope

"There is some good news here in that some Australian plant species may have the potential to respond to, and cope with, increasing temperatures," says co-author Greg Guerin, also from the University of Adelaide.

The changes to the leaf size could be due to "plasticity", where individual plants shrink their leaves in response to warm weather. Alternatively, it could be due to migration, where plants that used to grow further north are moving south. There is a third possibility, however: the change in leaf size could be an evolutionary adaptation to climate change, says Guerin.

Although this might be good news for some species, Guerin points out that adaptation is unlikely to help some of the most vulnerable species.

"Other species have less potential to adapt. These species may rely more heavily on tracking favourable climate through migration but this can be problematic in a landscape fragmented by human activity," he says.

The next step for the team is to figure out whether other features of plants are also changing to cope with warmer weather and to find out how widespread these changes are among different species.

"The value of historical collections is huge. You can't replicate that kind of sampling."

Pakistan: NATO supply deal looking more likely

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? U.S. and Pakistani officials expressed optimism Monday that Islamabad was close to reopening its Afghan border to NATO troop supplies after a 7-month blockade, a move that could significantly reduce tension between the two countries.

The tussle over the supply line, which Pakistan closed in November in retaliation for American airstrikes that killed 24 of its troops, has driven the bilateral relationship to new lows, threatening U.S. prospects in Afghanistan.

The two sides have been deadlocked for months because of disagreements over transit payments and Washington's refusal to apologize for the deadly attack, which it insists was an accident.

The Pakistani government has also been worried about the inevitable political backlash from reopening the route, given the high level of anti-American sentiment in the country.

While the exact details of a deal remain unclear, there are growing signs that a breakthrough could be imminent.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf called a meeting of the defense committee of the Cabinet on Tuesday to decide whether to reopen the supply line, according to a senior Pakistani official.

"The environment seems to be optimistic," the official said.

The Pakistani ambassador to the U.S., Sherry Rehman, left for Pakistan on Sunday night to be present for the meeting, according to two other Pakistani officials who said it appeared a resolution on the supply line was near.

The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicate nature of the matter.

The decision to call the Cabinet meeting followed a visit Monday by a high-level American delegation to Islamabad that included the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen; Under Secretary of Defense for Policy James Miller; and Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Thomas Nides, said a senior U.S. official. It was Allen's second visit in less than a week.

The latest trip was a prime example of how "quiet diplomacy can play a significant role to get things done," the official said.

The U.S. addressed Pakistan's demands for higher transit fees by sweetening the deal with extensive road construction projects, the American official said, without providing specific figures.

Before the November attack, Pakistan was charging the U.S. $250 per truck. Afterward, Pakistan demanded $5,000 and the U.S. countered with $500. It's unclear where the deal stands now.

The U.S. has compensated for the closed route by using a much longer, more expensive supply line that runs into Afghanistan through Central Asia. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the route is costing an extra $100 million a month now and could grow as the U.S. starts to withdraw equipment in advance of the 2014 troop drawdown in Afghanistan.

The issue that has bogged down negotiations the most is the U.S. refusal to apologize for the November attack, which Washington has said was conducted in self-defense after Pakistani troops fired on American forces.

The Obama administration is apparently worried that apologizing could expose it to criticism from Republicans, given anger over Pakistan's alleged support for militants battling U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

The U.S. has sought to finesse the issue by providing a list of senior officials who have expressed regret over the incident, including President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, said the senior American official on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.

While a deal seems more likely, it is by no means guaranteed.

Pakistan appeared close to reopening the supply line in May, prompting NATO to invite Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to a summit in Chicago largely focused on the Afghan war. When Pakistan failed to follow through, Obama made his anger clear by refusing to have a one-on-one meeting with Zardari.

The U.S. is eager to resolve the conflict because Pakistan's cooperation is seen as key to success in Afghanistan, especially in negotiating a peace deal with Taliban militants with whom Islamabad has strong historical ties.

Pakistan is motivated by a desire to keep billions of dollars in American aid flowing to the country. More than $1 billion in military aid has been frozen over the last year and would likely be released only if Pakistan reopened the supply route. Some members of Congress have called for cutting off all U.S. aid unless Pakistan cooperates.

Fireworks from the sun ... on the Fourth?

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captures views of today's M5.6-class solar flare in multiple ultraviolet wavelengths.

The sun sent out a flare powerful enough to disrupt radio communications over Europe today, along with an eruption of electrically charged particles that just might sweep past Earth's magnetic field in time to spark a Fourth of July show of auroral fireworks.

The M5.6-class solar flare, observed by NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory at 6:52 a.m. ET (10:52 GMT), was almost powerful enough to cross over from the medium M-class category to an extreme X-class event, SpaceWeather.com's Tony Phillips noted. "A pulse of X-rays and UV radiation from the flare illuminated Earth's upper atmosphere, producing waves of ionization over Europe," he wrote.

Such waves can spark bursts of radio static, as recorded by Rob Stammes in Norway and noted by the National Weather Service's Space Weather Prediction Center. "Radio blackout storms have been observed in the past 24 hours," the center reported on its Facebook page.

SpaceWeather.com says the solar eruption threw out a coronal mass ejection, or CME???not directly toward Earth, but in a southerly celestial direction. In the video above, you can see the solar material blurping downward and outward from a monster sunspot region known as AR 1515.

Phillips writes that the "south-traveling cloud could deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetosphere on July 4th or 5th." However, the Space Weather Prediction Center says the CME "is not expected to disturb the field during the forecast period."

The sun is in the midst of an upswing in its 11-year activity cycle, heading toward an expected maximum in 2013. Right now there are five sunspot regions on the sun's Earth-facing side, and two of them?? 1513 and 1515?? are considered capable of sending out M-class flares. Such flares are generally associated with moderate disruption of radio communication and navigation systems. As for today's CME, the most likely effect will be heightened displays of the northern and southern lights.

CME or not, it looks as if it's a good week for auroras, judging from the pictures being sent in to SpaceWeather.com's real-time image gallery. The prime time for auroras generally begins at just about the time of night that the fireworks shows are finishing up. And there's more to see besides the fireworks: This happens to be a great week for seeing the full moon and Mars in sunset skies, or seeing Jupiter and Venus just before dawn. Scalia critics say justice too political last term

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Justice Antonin Scalia drew unusually critical attention during this past Supreme Court term for comments he made in court and in his writing that seemed to some more political than judicial.

His dissent in the Arizona immigration case contained a harsh assessment of the Obama administration's immigration policy and prompted a public rebuke from a fellow Republican-appointed judge.

Scalia's aggressive demeanor during argument sessions even earned him some gentle teasing from his closest personal friend on the court. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, speaking at a Washington convention, said the term's high-profile cases may explain why Scalia "called counsel's argument 'extraordinary' no fewer than 10 times."

The 76-year-old Scalia is a gifted writer with a razor wit and willingness to do battle with those on the other side of an issue.
