WEST PALM BEACH?
The first baby born in South Florida in 2012 was a healthy boy born to a Lake Worth couple just after midnight Sunday, while one of the area's biggest new kids arrived 40 minutes later in Hollywood.
The two boys take honors as the first births recorded this new year in Palm Beach and Broward counties.
With a Jan. 4 due date for the birth of their second child, Martineau and Bertha Dante of Lake Worth did not make any plans to party on New Year's Eve.
"I had a feeling," said Martineau Dante, 29.
The couple's second son, named Marcos Jarett Dante, was born at 12:02 a.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach. He weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces, his dad said.
The first birth recorded in Broward was also a boy, who clocked in at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood at 42 minutes after midnight. Devonte Accius weighed 9 pounds, 9 ounces.
He also rushed his due date, which was Jan. 9.
"I was told the baby would be about seven pounds," said the boy's happy mother, Rose Lazarre, 27, as she held her first child Sunday afternoon in the hospital room. "It was a surprise."
The boy's father, Diomene Accius, 31, said that when Lazarre returns to work as a casino cashier in two months, the couple would share child care duties. He works days as an insulation installer.
"I feel like I won the lottery today," said Accius, who lives with Rose in Hallandale Beach. "I feel like a millionaire."
In West Palm Beach, Dante said he and his wife were "elated" about the birth of their second son, which took place just one hour after they arrived at the hospital.
When Bertha Dante, 29, began having contractions Saturday evening, Martineau Dante said the couple went for a walk in their Lake Worth neighborhood. By the time they returned home, "I just grabbed the packed bag and got in the car," he said. Her contractions were five minutes apart, he said.
Dante, also 29, a computer technician for the Palm Beach County library system, said he called the couple's physician and the hospital on the way, and from then on, all went smoothly.
"To have a baby is a blessing from God," said Dante. "And he has an easy birth date to remember."
Marcos was expected to meet his older brother, Marlo, when the 2-year-old comes to the hospital Sunday afternoon with his grandparents. They spent Sunday morning at church.
