May is a huge month for home improvement retailers.
Listen:
This month is the time when Hoosiers swing into high gear with spring cleaning, landscaping and "Do It Yourself" projects around the house. That's why May has been dubbed "National Home Improvement Month." Pat Sullivan of Sullivan's Hardware says May is the number one month for hardware retailers. Sullivan says business this month is twice as big as any other month.
Sullivan says now is definitely the best time to do those painting jobs. He says folks should avoid painting their homes during summer when high humidity tends to be a risk. Sullivan also says there are plenty of home improvement "nightmares" that involve people knocking out walls without knowing whether they're load bearing walls. He says folks should also be careful about digging deep around their property. Sullivan says people can hit all kinds of lines like utility, cable and even gas lines so they should be careful.
Of course, the rise in DIY television shows and even networks have fueled the home improvement craze, but Sullivan says caution and at least consulting with reputable professionals is always advisable.
