Prefab Building on Florida Polytechnic Campus Recommended

The structure would serve facilities functions eventually. (PROVIDED TO THE LEDGER)

Published: Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 12:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Monday, July 29, 2013 at 11:59 p.m.

LAKELAND | As Florida Polytechnic University gears up for a fall 2014 opening, administrators and staff have been working out of office space on South Florida Avenue.

But when prospective students and parents come calling, they will want to see the future site of the state's 12th university.

By mid-November, a premanufactured building should be on site to house about a dozen university employees to allow them to operate before permanent space is ready. Others will remain at the 1 Poly Place address on South Florida Avenue.

The university's Operations Committee met via conference call Monday and voted on the premanufactured building option. The committee will recommend the full board approve $1.169 million for the building.

They also heard about modular trailers and conventional construction, but the premanufactured option was chosen for several reasons, including the fact that it can be used by the facilities staff later, so most of the cost will not go to waste. It will be set up next to a campus control center for that purpose.

Contractor Pete Karamitsanis, president of Lighthouse Advisors, said the building should be ready to be occupied by mid-Novem?ber.

The concept of setting up the recruiting space is similar to that of a model home at a construction site. The approximately 5,000-square-foot building will give students and parents an idea of what the Florida Poly experience will be like.

"We are actually setting up a classroom because we won't be able to show students classrooms for a long time," said Admissions Director Scott Rhodes.

The classroom area will be divided into four sections and include a laboratory setting and a typical classroom.

The building will provide space for group presentations, conference rooms, private meeting rooms and office space for recruiters and financial aid counselors.

The staff wants the structure to present an appropriate public "face" for the univer?sity.

"A steel structure will communicate permanency, which we believe is critical at this juncture to selling the total Florida Polytechnic first-year student experience," Rhodes said.

Brochures, information on a website and videos might show prospective students a bit of what it will be like there, but an on-site setup will serve as a more informative way to describe Florida Poly, he said.

"Florida Polytechnic University is selling a completely new type of 21st-century college experience," he said. "So while you're selling the future and a dream, you are still selling a college experience. Therefore, it's critical that the experience be as real as possible and help prospective families visualize what they are choosing: Florida Polytechnic University.

The budget includes $919,302 for a total projected cost for the building, including $670,000 for construction and additional funds for setting up parking lots and land?scaping.

About $50,000 is budgeted for golf carts to transport people on tours. Another $100,000 is included for furnishings and electronic equipment, but Rhodes and others will be using a lot of furnishings the university inherited from the University of South Florida Polytechnic.

Examination of lymph nodes provides more accurate breast cancer ...

After a breast cancer operation, the removed tumour is always examined, as its subtype can provide an indication of how aggressive the disease is. The patient's lymph nodes are not analysed in the same way. Yet the breast tumour can sometimes appear to be of a less aggressive type while the subtype in the lymph nodes gives a different and more worrying picture.

In these cases, it is the lymph nodes that provide the correct prognosis, according to new research at Lund University in Sweden. An analysis of the proliferation, hormone receptor status and HER2 status of the lymph nodes would in many cases show a significantly more accurate picture of the risk of metastases, i.e. a recurrence of the disease and its spreading to other organs.

"It would be easy to add such an analysis. It does not require any expensive specialist technology, but only an extension of the normal, routine pathology work", says Lisa Ryd?n, a consultant surgeon and researcher at Lund University.

The study covers 500 women in the early stages of breast cancer who underwent surgery in Lund or Helsingborg. Early-stage breast cancer is when the cancer has not yet spread to other organs. However, in approximately one third of all the women who underwent surgery for early-stage breast cancer, there were traces of the tumour in the lymph nodes, which can provide important additional information.

"Sometimes the molecular study showed the same subtype in the breast tissue and in the lymph nodes. But sometimes the types were different. And when we investigated the outcomes for the women 10 years later, the prognosis followed the subtype that was present in the lymph nodes and not the one in the breast", says Lisa Ryd?n.

Thus when doctors only examine the breast tissue, there is a risk that the tumour will be found to be of a low-risk type, which affects decisions on further treatment. The lymph nodes may meanwhile show signs of a more aggressive form of tumour, but that is never discovered.

"If, on the other hand, we start routinely analysing the lymph nodes as well, we can treat women in such cases with additional cytostatic and targeted drugs after their operation. This could prevent later recurrence of the disease" thinks Lisa Ryd?n.

A fairly small proportion of the patients in the study showed a difference in tumour type between the breast tissue and the lymph nodes. But since breast cancer is such a common disease, the number of patients affected nationally and globally will still be considerable and, for them, the difference can be that between life and death, the Lund researcher points out.

Junta Leaders OK Use of Military to Detain Protesters

by Scott Creighton Found two sources on this. Sounds more like they are openly warning the people of Egypt rather than embarking on some new tactic since they have arrested many protesters already. But it is interesting to note that both countries who have floated Egypt a lot of money since the coup have brutal dictatorships much like what is being re-created in Egypt. In the modern world, the biggest threat to any neo-liberal country is it?s own people and that is why we will all see the use of a nation?s Military turned against it?s own people. India vs Zimbabwe 3rd ODI: Mishra, Kohli guide India to easy victory, clinch series 3-0

A disciplined India notched up a convincing seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the third One-day International to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series in Harare on Sunday. SCORECARD

Amit Mishra scalped four wickets and skipper Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 88-ball 68 to emerge as star performers for India as they guided the visitors to their third straight victory in the series.

Mishra led a disciplined show by the bowlers as they dismissed Zimbabwe for a paltry 183 in just 46 overs after Kohli won the toss and decided to bowl.

The visitors overhauled the target in 35.3 overs, riding on Kohli's fifty and useful contributions from Shikhar Dhawan (35), Ambati Rayudu (33) and Suresh Raina (28 not out).

Kohli, who had scored a match-winning 115 in the first ODI, once again led from the front as he starred in three useful partnerships.

He added 40 with Dhawan for the second wicket, before forging a 64-run stand with Rayudu for the third wicket, while it was the unbeaten 56-run partnership off 32 balls with Raina which finally took India home.

Chasing 184 to win, openers Rohit Sharma (14) and Shikhar Dhawan (35) made a watchful start as pacers Brian Vitori and Michael Chinouya bowled in tandem.

Sharma's poor run with the bat in this series continued as he was the first batsman to be sent back to the pavilion when he fall to debutante Chinouya.

Sharma chased a widish length delivery from the pacer only to edge it wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor. The Mumbaikar had scored two fours in his 21 balls.

Dhawan, however, didn't allow Sharma's wicket to affect the run flow as he blasted Vitori over square leg for a four and then pulled him for another boundary in the same area in the seventh over.

First down batsman Virat Kohli took one over to get a feel of the wicket and then brought up his first boundary in the ninth over when he whipped Tendai Chatara across the deep backward square leg fence.

Dhawan then cut one across the cover in the same over to pick up easy runs. The left-handed batsman welcomed Prosper Utseya with a four through the leg side in the 12th over.

His stay was cut short by Chatara in the 15th over when trying to hit a length delivery off the front foot, Dhawan ended up hitting it straight to Sibanda at shortish cover.

Runs dried up after that as Kohli and new man Ambati Rayudu (33) tried to steady the ship, picking up ones and twos. In the 22nd over, Rayudu picked up a much-needed boundary when his thick edge off Utseya went flying past slip.

In the next over, Elton Chigumbura was introduced into the attack and Rayudu and Kohli hit him for two fours.

After the end of 29 overs, India took their batting powerplay but Rayudu lost his wicket when he chipped a pitched up delivery from Vitori straight to the bowler. His 54-ball innings had two fours.

In the 32nd over, Kohli sent Chinouya sailing over deep square leg for a boundary, while new man Suresh Raina too cleared the midwicket boundary in the next over.

Kohli brought up his fifty in the 34th over with a brilliant drive off the front foot, which bisected the mid off and extra cover before clearing the fence.

Three balls later, the India skipper danced down the wicket and smashed Chinouya over wide long off for the first six of Indian innings.

In the next over, Kohli and Raina picked up a couple of fours as India inched towards the win. It was Raina, who blasted a four off Chatara to bring up the final runs.

Earlier, Mishra took four for 47 to help India dismiss Zimbabwe for 183. Mohammed Shami (2/25), Jaydev Unadkat (1/24), Ravindra Jadeja (39) and R Vinay Kumar (1/32) were the other successful bowlers for India.

Sean Williams top-scored for Zimbabwe with 45 off 53 balls.

Leading 2-0 in the five-match series, Kohli's decision to bowl was vindicated as his pacers struck twice in the first two overs at the Harare Sports Club.

?While R Vinay Kumar accounted for Vusi Sibanda even before the hosts could open their account, Shami sent back the other-wise reliable Sikander Raza when he had the opener caught behind by Dinesh Karthik.

Hamilton Masakadza (38) and skipper Brendan Taylor (23) added 65 runs for the third wicket to stabilise the innings before Jaydev Unadkat struck with the scoreboard reading 67 for three in the 16th over.

The Zimbabwean captain, who stood his ground after Shami leapt to his left from mid-off to pull off a catch, walked back after the third umpire upheld the on-field umpires' decision. Taylor hit three fours during his 44-ball knock.

Taylor's dismissal was the beginning of slide as Zimbabwe lost three more wickets quickly, with leg-spinner Mishra taking two of them off successive balls.

Coming in to bowl his first over of the match, Mishra tasted success immediately as Masakadza, trying to cut a short of length delivery, edged it to the keeper as the hosts lost their top four batsmen within the first 20 overs. The batsman struck five fours off 53 balls.

Malcolm Waller was out next ball as Mishra had the batsman trapped in front for a golden duck with a googly, leaving the Zimbabweans reeling at 80 for five in the 20th over.

Ravindra Jadeja made it 89 for six as the slow left-arm spinner hit Elton Chigumbura on the pads with one that might have missed the leg stump because of the angle.

Two-headed turtle Thelma and Louise get their own Facebook page

So many people are curious about Thelma and Louise, the female turtle born with two heads at the San Antonio Zoo last month, that the zoo launched an official Facebook page for fans who want updates and photos about the quirky reptile.

?We get inquires from people wanting to know how they're doing,? said zoo spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike, who still fields calls and emails from around the world about the two-headed Texas cooter.

The Facebook page offered an easy way to share how Thelma and Louise are developing, she said, and it will offer updates about the plight of other tortoise and turtle species. The zoo also set up pages for ?Louise Left Head? and ?Thelma Right Head.?

While uncommon, two-headed turtles occasionally hatch as a result of twin embryos that didn't fully separate. So far, it appears that Thelma and Louise, born on June 18, are completely healthy.

?They are doing amazing,? Rios-Vanskike said. ?They're eating. They're getting along. They're swimming together. There are no signs that there's anything wrong with them.?

The zoo employees who run the page are also having fun with it. Thelma and Louise are listed as a single female who attended the ?University of Turtledome.?

Favorite bands include Selena, Lyle Lovett and the Turtles. Duh.

UNREST IN EGYPT: At least 65 dead as supporters of President Morsi take on military forces

Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi protest at the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt, Friday, July 26, 2013. Prosecutors opened an investigation of ousted President Mohammed Morsi on charges including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, fueling tensions amid a showdown in the streets between tens of thousands of backers of the military and supporters calling for the Islamist leader's reinstatement.(AP Photo/Hassan Ammar)

As charges of murder and conspiracy were brought against President Mohammed Morsi Friday, tensions bubbled over into violent clashes between supports of Morsi and the opposition.

CAIRO ?? Security forces clashed with supporters of Egypt's ousted president early Saturday, killing at least 65 protesters, the Health Ministry said, in the country's bloodiest incidence of violence since the military deposed Mohammed Morsi.

In chaotic scenes, pools of blood stained the floor and bodies were lined up under white sheets in a makeshift hospital near the site of the battles in eastern Cairo as doctors struggled to cope with the flood of dozens of wounded.

The extent of the carnage underlined the willingness of police to unleash deadly firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests demanding the reinstatement of Morsi. Military-backed authorities are feeling emboldened after millions turned out for nationwide rallies Friday called by the army chief in support of a tough hand against what he called "terrorism."

Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, a longtime pro-democracy campaigner who backed the military's ouster of Morsi, raised one of the few notes of criticism of the bloodshed in the new military-backed leadership.

"I highly condemn the excessive use of force and the fall of victims," he wrote in a tweet, though he did not directly place blame for the use of force. He added that he is "working very hard and in all directions to end this confrontation in a peaceful manner."

The bloodshed also pointed to the Islamists' readiness to challenge the security forces as Morsi's supporters try to win over public support for their cause.

The fighting, which began before dawn and stretched out over several hours, was the deadliest bouts of violence since the military ousted Morsi on July 3 in the wake of massive protests demanding his removal. Soon after Morsi's fall, more than 50 of his supporters were killed in a similar outbreak of violence outside a headquarters of the Republican Guard.

A leading figure of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed el-Beltagy, blamed the violence on army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's call for rallies on Friday.

"This is the mandate el-Sissi took last night ? to commit massacres and bloodshed against peaceful protesters denouncing the military coup," el-Beltagy said in a statement on his Facebook page.

RELATED: SIX KILLED IM CAIRO PROTESTS, TWO IN SINAI

The clashes began after a crowd of Morsi supporters late Friday moved out of their main sit-in camp where they have been located for nearly three weeks, in front of the Rabaah al-Adawiyah Mosque.

Google Hangouts gets a minor update with more emoji and butter

    Hangouts

More butter and emoji added to the recipe, still missing that dash of Google Voice that everyone wants.

Google Hangouts has received a relatively minor update today, bringing the app to version 1.1. Normally, we don't cover every little app update, but this time around the team have added a little bit of project butter to make the app smoother, and folks with older phones are going to be happy with that news. The full change log:

    • Added more emoji!
    • We added some butter to Hangouts to make it run faster and slicker.
    • Fixed a bunch of bugs.

We still all hope that Google can incorporate Google Voice or SMS messages into Hangouts, but no dice just yet. The last couple updates have had some interesting permissions, though. Hit the break to see what I mean, and grab the update from the Google Play link up top.

Google appears poised to unveil new Nexus tablets

(AP) ? Google appears to be getting ready to introduce the next generation of its Nexus tablets.

The unveiling is likely to come at a July 24 event in San Francisco. Google Inc. sent invitations Wednesday to the media.

The event will be hosted by Sundar Pichai (SOON-dahr pihch-EYE), a Google executive who oversees the company's Android and Chrome operating systems.

Android, the world's leading mobile operating system, powers Google's line-up of Nexus tablets. Those devices have emerged as a popular alternative to Apple Inc.'s iPad since Google released the first Nexus tablet with a 7-inch display screen last July.

It has become customary for top-selling devices to be upgraded at least once a year, fueling speculation that is what Google is about to do with the Nexus next week.

Groups sue to halt NSA electronic surveillance

    NSA

    Hands on keyboard

    NBC News file

Rights activists, church leaders and drug and gun rights advocates found common ground and filed a lawsuit against the federal government to halt a vast National Security Agency electronic surveillance program.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday, San Francisco's Electronic Frontier Foundation, representing the unusually broad coalition of plaintiffs, is seeking an injunction against the NSA, Justice Department, FBI and directors of the agencies.

The suit filed in federal court in San Francisco challenges what the plaintiffs describe as an illegal and unconstitutional program of dragnet electronic surveillance.

The suit comes after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked details about NSA surveillance programs earlier this year.

NSA public affairs deferred comment on the lawsuit to the Justice Department. A Justice Department spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell Pumping Up His 2016 Campaign Chest

It?s never too soon to start thinking about the future.

And when it comes to raising campaign cash Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell seems to be a strong believer in that mantra.

The mayor?s announced three campaign fundraisers in the month of July, with the next one scheduled tonight at Vino at Restaurant Row downtown.

Since April, Caldwell has planned seven fundraisers, many of them at fancy locales, such as the Halekulani, 3660 On The Rise and the Waialae Country Club.

The suggested donation has ranged from $500-$4,000. Tonight?s soiree has a $500 a head asking price.

Caldwell was nearly a quarter million dollars in debt after the November election.

Stamford Political Parties To Endorse Mayor Candidates

STAMFORD, Conn. ? The 2013 mayoral election in Stamford will be kicked up a notch as the local parties hold their endorsement conventions this week.

The Republican Town Committee will be meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 507 Shippan Ave., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the Democratic City Committee at the Sheraton Hotel, 700 E. Main St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Republicans will be choosing between Board of Education member Jerry Pia and former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele.

The Democrats will choose among state Rep. William Tong, Board of Finance member David Martin, and ex-Director of Public Safety, Health, and Wellness William Callion.

Also planning to be on the ballot is John Zito who will be a petitioning candidate. Zito is a Stamford native and local business owner.

The mayor?s race became wide open after current Mayor Michael Pavia decided not to run for re-election earlier this year. Pavia was elected in 2009, defeating Martin, and replacing Dannel Malloy, who did not seek re-election but campaigned successfully for governor.

Candidates who are not endorsed by the party will be able to file petitions by Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. and a primary, if necessary, will be Sept. 10, according to the secretary of the state?s website. Election Day will be on Nov. 5.

Tricare changes could limit treatment for 23000 military children with ...

    Military families deserve better.

Lawmakers and advocacy groups are calling on military insurance provider Tricare to change new restrictions they say limits services and treatment for children with autism.

Starting July 25, Tricare is requiring children with autism to undergo standardized testing every six months and show "measurable progress" in order to receive applied behavior analysis therapy, or ABA. Patients will also have to apply for Tricare waivers if treatment stretches beyond two years and for children older than age 16.

Patients that fail to make progress or show sustainable gains could be discharged from the intensive treatment.

The change has drawn the ire of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Patty Murray, D-Wa., a member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee. The two questioned the provision that cuts off care for children who do not show progress during a six month period.

"The apparent lack of understanding of the needs of children with developmental disability, including autism, when drafting the recent Tricare policy changes is astounding. The departure from how Tricare covers all other medical care is also very concerning," the Senators wrote in a letter to Tricare director Dr. Jonathan Woodson.

"Given the impact family health care plays on military readiness, it is essential military families have assurances of continued health care. Policies inconsistent with good clinical practice only serve to limit, restrict, delay, and deny care," they wrote.

The Tricare change will impact more than 23,000 military children, many of whom face unique challenges due to relocation and dealing with deployments, the Senators said.

"Military children with developmental disabilities such as autism often experience periods of regression due to life events, such as deployment, relocation, change in school, change in medications, etc." the Senators wrote. "Coming back from those periods of regression often takes significant time and effort ... and sometimes progress may be simply the absence of regression. During these challenging times of need, discharging an individual from care is inappropriate and will have long lasting results on patient outcomes."

The Senators ask that Tricare officials consult with experts in development disabilities before instituting the changes. They also direct Tricare to identify any other chronic health conditions that require standardized testing or evidence of progress to receive care.

    Advocacy group questions change

The Tricare change has drawn the attention of Autism Speaks, an autism advocacy and research group. The new requirements will limit access to ABA therapy for children, Autism Speaks officials said, adding administrative changes could also reduce the number of healthcare providers accepting Tricare.

"These policies drastically change how ABA is covered under Tricare and will impact all beneficiaries and service providers," said Karen Driscoll, Autism Speaks' associate director for federal government affairs and military relations. "Autism Speaks is very concerned about the imposition of age and duration limits, threatened cutoffs for treatment, and the administrative hurdles to access care.

"Military families deserve better," she said.

Iraq fails again to resume Northern oil exports via Turkey - shippers

    By Hassan Hafidh

Iraq has failed again to resume pumping of crude from Kirkuk oil fields in northern Iraq to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan in Turkey which has been halted for the last 25 days, Middle East shipping agents said Monday.

"The flow was resumed for few hours late Thursday but it was stopped again on Friday," a shipping agent based in Ceyhan told Dow Jones Newswires. "They pumped only a few barrels which aren't worth exporting," he added.

Another shipping agent said that he didn't know when Iraq is expected to resume the flow which was stopped since June 21 due to a leak in part of the pipeline inside Iraq.

Iraq normally exports an average of 350,000 to 400,000 barrels a day but sabotage to the pipeline over the last few months, as well as technical problems, has reduced the flow. Last month, Iraq only exported 193,000 barrels a day via the pipeline because of damage to the structure by unknown attackers.

The Iraq-Turkey pipeline that carries crude from Kirkuk oil fields to Ceyhan has frequently been attacked, sometimes in Turkey but mostly in Iraq. The pipeline was idle for many years due to acts of sabotage after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Give The Gift Of A Gift That Looks Like Raw Meat

There is something so fabulous about this idea. Even though it's overpriced and probably aesthetically overwrought or something, the idea of wrapping gifts to look like raw meat is just beautiful. It brings the whole joke gift genre to a new level. Or makes people extra excited when their gift turns out to be awesome or even passable. If you're someone who never wraps gifts this could be the turning point.

Gift Couture is the "creative and innovative wrapping paper company" (what?) we have to thank for this marvelous invention. The meat Kickstarter is on the move, and they've already produced the now-sold-out cheeseburger wrapping paper below. The standard set is $15 for two sheets of steak paper and one piece of cutting board paper, and the grade A set also comes with butcher paper, a meat tray, gift tags and twine for $5 more. But really it's all about the raw meat. It goes with anything, can be interpreted as genuine or ironic, and really shows the recipient of your gift that you care. [Design Taxi]

Colby College reopening expanded art museum
    July 13, 2013 09:17 EDT

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) -- Colby College's expanded art museum is opening this weekend.

The museum has been closed while workers completed an addition that means the museum now has 38,000 square feet of exhibition space, the largest in the state.

A "friends of the museum" event on Saturday on campus in Waterville will be followed by a formal opening to the public on Sunday.

The college hopes that the new and improved museum will lift the state's profile as an art destination.

The addition became necessary after Peter and Paula Lunder donated about 500 works from their private collection to the museum. The Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion adds 10,000 square feet of exhibition space and serves as the museum's entrance.

How much privacy will you have with Microsoft's 'family of devices'?

Windows may only be a "shell" now, said six different times by Steve Ballmer as he revealed a new strategy for Microsoft that revolves around a "family of devices." The company will "design, create and deliver through us and through third parties a complete family of Windows-powered devices," which will include "a full spectrum of both partner and first-party devices. Our family will include phones, tablets, PCs, 2-in-1s, TV-attached devices and other devices to be imagined and developed."

What good is a door lock if the manufacturer first hands out a master key to law enforcement? What good is a promise that your privacy is a top priority by a company that provides spying for free to law enforcement? What good is encryption if Prism capabilities allow intelligence agencies to collect your emails, such as those from Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live, before they are encrypted? What do you have to look forward to with Microsoft's upcoming "family of devices?" Surely there will be government surveillance backdoors on all.

Your privacy is very important to Microsoft, the company alleges, as it used privacy for a battleground to slam Google.? For example, during its anti-Google campaign Scroogled, Microsoft launched a privacy petition to stop Google from scanning "every word of every email" to serve up relevant ads. The Redmond giant pointed out that "there's no way to opt out of this invasion of your privacy." But thanks to documents provided by Edward Snowden, we know that there is no way to opt out of Microsoft practically handing all your emails directly to intelligence agencies. It's more than email; what you store on SkyDrive and what do over Skype is not private. Is that not also an invasion of your privacy?

After reviewing top secrets PRISM documents obtained by Snowden, The Guardian reported that Microsoft collaborated with intelligence agencies, and even helped the NSA circumvent Microsoft's own encryption, so the government could conduct surveillance through the company's products.

    • Microsoft helped the NSA to circumvent its encryption to address concerns that the agency would be unable to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal;
    • The agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.com, including Hotmail;
    • The company worked with the FBI this year to allow the NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, which now has more than 250 million users worldwide;
    • Microsoft also worked with the FBI's Data Intercept Unit to "understand" potential issues with a feature in Outlook.com that allows users to create email aliases;
    • In July last year, nine months after Microsoft bought Skype, the NSA boasted that a new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism;
    • Material collected through Prism is routinely shared with the FBI and CIA, with one NSA document describing the program as a "team sport".

Microsoft + Skype = Sky.netIn fact one document dated a year ago, July 2012, claims that Prism monitoring of Microsoft-owned Skype now includes video chats. "The audio portions of these sessions have been processed correctly all along, but without the accompanying video. Now, analysts will have the complete 'picture'."

Another document, dated April 2013, claims the FBI worked "for many months" with Microsoft "to allow Prism access without separate authorization to its cloud storage service SkyDrive."

Microsoft said it does not provide "blanket" or "direct" access to "any government" for all its products, but only provides customer data "in response to government demands and we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers." The company added, "When we upgrade or update products we aren't absolved from the need to comply with existing or future lawful demands."

Yet Microsoft has a long history of spurning users' privacy in favor of assisting law enforcement and intelligence agencies obtain private user data. For example, Microsoft?unlike other tech giants?does not charge the government even a penny for surveillance of its users. Besides spying on its users for free, the Redmond giant offers the computer forensic software COFEE for free to law enforcement; COFEE assists LEA in extracting private data from Windows computers.

Microsoft new security policy for appsRegarding the future of Microsoft, Ballmer promised that "Going forward, our strategy will focus on creating a family of devices and services for individuals and businesses that empower people around the globe at home, at work and on the go, for the activities they value most."

I suppose privacy is not usually described as an activity, but don't expect to have any privacy in Microsoft's cloud and "family of devices." Microsoft may offer privacy features to users in its upcoming family of "phones, tablets, PCs, 2-in-1s, TV-attached devices," but not before making sure those features are cracked to assure they are not kept private from intelligence agencies. After all, Microsoft isn't "absolved from the need to comply with existing or future lawful demands," so how could any new products not come with built-in backdoors to assist in surveillance by intelligence agencies?

Germans Re-Thinking ?Turn? to Green Energy

    wind turbine

In the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, the German government made the much-heralded decision to close all the country?s nuclear reactors as part of its?Energiewende, or ?energy revolution.? The ?revolution? also included government mandates and massive subsidies for renewable energy.

While Germans gleefully embraced the ?Nuclear Power? No Thanks!? movement and global greens pointed to Germany as the future of the Green Economy, the sheen is starting to come off the German revolution. The last few months have been a slaughter for the German solar energy. Amid talk of a trade war with China over cheap imported solar panels, the giant German engineering firm?Siemens?shuttered its solar division after?hemorrhaging?more than a billion dollars in just two years.

Now?Forbes?reports that the rest of the German solar industry isn?t following far behind: two of the country?s biggest solar firms, Conenergy and Gehrlicher Solar, both filed for insolvency last week. Another engineering titan, Bosch, has also decided to get out of the solar market.

Meanwhile, the country?s other major green energy project?off-shore windfarms in the Baltic and North Sea?is also threatening to turn into a?boondoggle. The massive projects off the northern coast of Germany are supposed to supply 9% of the country?s energy needs by 2023 and were a cornerstone of the government?s plan to abandon nuclear power. Yet engineering challenges,?uncertainty?around future energy prices and NIMBYs who object to overhead high-tension wires passing through their neighborhoods all threaten to make the project a dangerous white elephant. According to the?Economist:

Investors have gone cool on building windmills in German waters because of their costs and doubts over future electricity rates. A study, commissioned from an independent consultant by TenneT, reckons that less than 6GW of the planned 14GW of turbines are likely to be built by 2023. If so, laments VZBV, a consumer body, Germans will end up paying heavily for a lot of useless transmission gear out at sea.

All of these developments have the German public and their elected representatives seriously reconsidering the wisdom of their ?revolution.? German consumers haven?t been happy with their skyrocketing energy rates, while German industries have struggled to remain competitive while paying much more for electricity than overseas competition. As green jobs have been disappearing in Germany?employment in the solar sector fell to?87,000 in 2012 from 110,900 a year earlier?German leaders have slashed many of its flagship green programs.?Now German?Environment?Minister Peter Altmaier, a member of Chancellor Merkel?s Christian Democratic party, is saying that the country will end solar subsidies by the year 2018.

The wheels are falling off of Germany?s green energy bandwagon. Many greens saw Berlin?s efforts as a sign of things to come; this reversal of momentum should be instructive.

Tribune to acquire 19 TV stations for $2.73B

(AP) ? Tribune Co. said Monday that it reached a deal to buy Local TV Holdings LLC's 19 TV stations for $2.73 billion in cash, significantly boosting its television business as it looks to sell its newspaper operations.

Tribune currently owns 23 TV stations and cable network WGN America, along with the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other newspapers. It says the deal will make it the country's largest commercial TV station owner with 42 stations.

Tribune Co. said it expects the deal to boost its profits immediately and result in more than $100 million in annual cost savings within five years. Local TV's holdings include stations in Denver, Cleveland, St. Louis and other major cities.

Meanwhile, the Chicago company said the increased scale will help it maximize its national and local advertising sales, while also giving it a larger footprint to distribute its video and digital content.

"This is a transformational acquisition for Tribune ? it makes us the No. 1 local TV affiliate group in America, expands the distribution platform for our high-quality video content, and extends the reach of our digital products to new audiences across the country," ?Tribune Co. President and CEO Peter Liguori said in a statement.

Tribune Co. is trying to sell its newspapers to focus on its more profitable broadcasting operations. The newspaper sale is being done at the behest of a group of lenders that took over the Tribune as part of a bankruptcy reorganization.

The newspapers have been hurt by a shift that has driven more readers and advertisers to the Internet and mobile devices. The downturn in print advertising was one of the factors that caused Tribune Co. to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008. It emerged from court oversight at the end of 2012.

Other traditional newspaper companies are also adding TV stations. Last month, Gannett Co., the publisher of USA Today, announced plans to buy TV station owner Belo Corp. for about $1.5 billion. If approved, the all-cash deal will make Gannett the fourth-largest broadcast group in the U.S.

Local TV is principally owned by private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners.

The deal, which remains subject to antitrust and Federal Communications Commission approvals, is expected to close by the end of 2013. Tribune Co. said it has received committed financing of up to $4.1 billion and expects the deal will be financed through a combination of debt financing and cash on hand.

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- A Kansas State University-led study has discovered the role of a protein in bacteria that cause a wide variety of diseases, including typhoid fever, plague, meningitis and dysentery. The results may lead to new and improved antibiotics for humans and animals.

Phillip E. Klebba, professor and head of the department of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, made the findings with two colleagues in the department: Lorne D. Jordan, doctoral candidate, Manhattan, and Salete M. Newton, research professor. The collaboration included other biophysicists at the University of Oklahoma and Purdue University. Their study, "Energy-dependent motion of TonB in the Gram-negative bacterial inner membrane," appears in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, or PNAS.

The research focuses on the central role of iron in biochemistry. Both animals and bacteria require iron for biological processes like energy generation and DNA, Klebba said. The iron acquisition systems of bacteria, however, contribute to infectious diseases.

"Iron is the object of a microbiological war in the human body," Klebba said. "Host proteins defend cells and tissues by sequestering the metal, and successful pathogens overcome this barrier and capture the iron. But the iron transport mechanisms of pathogenic organisms are not well understood."

The membrane protein TonB plays an indispensable role in the uptake of iron by Gram-negative bacteria -- a classification of bacteria that is more resistant to antibiotics because of a nearly impenetrable cell wall. Gram-negative bacteria can cause diseases such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Yersinia pestis, Vibrio cholera, Brucella abortus, Neisseria meningitidis cause many diseases and clinical conditions; they all transport iron by the same mechanism that depends on the actions of TonB.

Despite decades of research, the biochemical role of TonB in Gram-negative bacteria was a scientific mystery, Klebba said. He and his colleagues found that the cellular electrochemical forces put TonB in a spinning motion that provides the energy and physical mechanism to enable iron uptake into the cell.

"In this sense TonB acts like an electric motor that constantly rotates in response to the cellular energy flow," Klebba said. "TonB is one of nature's smallest and oldest electrical devices."

According to Klebba, future antibiotics may block the functions of TonB, prevent iron acquisition by Gram-negative cells, and consequently protect humans and animals from infection by such pathogen strains of bacteria.

Besides the PNAS study, Klebba recently shared the findings at the 2013 Gordon Conference on Mechanisms of Membrane Transport in South Hadley, Mass.

Nokia buys controlling stake of Nokia Siemens Networks for $2.2b

That didn't take long -- just hours after Bloomberg reported that Nokia was planning to buy out its German partner, the two firms have made it official: Nokia Siemens Networks is about to become a fully owned subsidiary of Espoo. The €1.7 billion ($2.2 billion) buyout will eventually see the Siemens name dropped from the network, naturally, though Nokia hasn't yet announced what the restructured entity will be called. The transaction isn't a complete surprise, of course -- earlier this year Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser told Dow Jones Newswires that 2013 was the year his company would help "NSN to move into a better place," announcing plans to separate from the partnership.

Kaeser continued the thought in today's announcement, calling Nokia's new acquisition as "an attractive opportunity to actively shape the telecom equipment market for the future and create sustainable value." Nokia head honcho Stephen Elop echoed the sentiment, speaking highly of NSN's recent financial growth and looking ahead to future ventures.
