Substance abuse is defined as the use of a substance or drug in amounts or with methods not condoned by medical professionals. This could usually lead to addiction, which is a chronic and progressive disease. Substance abuse physically damages the brain as studied and proven. When people become addicted with substances such as nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol, their brain alters their behaviour. Then they become dependent on them that their lives would definitely revolve around them. As a consequence, it will affect their total being and the people surrounding them.
With that, such an addictive person must quit from the abusive use of the abovementioned substances. The quest is never that simple however, the following guidelines are proposed to help an individual stop the vice before consulting a center for substance abuse treatment:

1. Admit that you have a problem. Some people are denying certain truths and they have a hard time accepting reality. With this, they try to run away from the unpleasantness of their lives so they turn into using substances that would tend to let them forget their problems. So by starting with the recognition of the problem within yourself, you can avoid substance abuse in some way.

2. Find a healthy activity. In order for you to start giving up your addiction, involve yourself into healthy fun activities such as sports or a hobby. In such a way, you can have an outlet to fill your empty emotional needs and physical withdrawal symptoms that accompany upon stopping substance abuse.

3. Change your diet. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates in order to increase sugar content in your body. By doing so, you will stop your craving for any substance because you already have your fill of sugar.

4. Avoid your drug buddies. Do not come into physical contact with your drug buddies anymore. Avoid going to places where you have engaged in substance abuse also. Surround yourself with people who can help you in your withdrawal process instead. With that, you won't be tempted into using such substances at all.

5. Involve in a clean community. Clean here means a drug-free community. To help you more, enrol in a center for substance abuse treatment. Medical professionals and counsellors are in service everytime you need somebody to talk to.

These are only a few of the easy ways on how to stop substance abuse but determination is always the key to totally eliminate substance abuse from your life.
