STAMFORD, Conn. ? The 2013 mayoral election in Stamford will be kicked up a notch as the local parties hold their endorsement conventions this week.
The Republican Town Committee will be meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 507 Shippan Ave., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the Democratic City Committee at the Sheraton Hotel, 700 E. Main St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The Republicans will be choosing between Board of Education member Jerry Pia and former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele.
The Democrats will choose among state Rep. William Tong, Board of Finance member David Martin, and ex-Director of Public Safety, Health, and Wellness William Callion.
Also planning to be on the ballot is John Zito who will be a petitioning candidate. Zito is a Stamford native and local business owner.
The mayor?s race became wide open after current Mayor Michael Pavia decided not to run for re-election earlier this year. Pavia was elected in 2009, defeating Martin, and replacing Dannel Malloy, who did not seek re-election but campaigned successfully for governor.
Candidates who are not endorsed by the party will be able to file petitions by Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. and a primary, if necessary, will be Sept. 10, according to the secretary of the state?s website. Election Day will be on Nov. 5.
