Facebook stock hits another low after 2Q earnings

Facebook's stock is at another all-time low.

The stock has been falling since Facebook released quarterly earnings Thursday for the first time as a public company. Investors were disappointed despite second-quarter results meeting Wall Street expectations, with revenue one-third higher than last year.

The stock lost $1.44, or 6.2 percent, to close Tuesday at $21.71. It is 43 percent below its initial public offering price of $38. Shares briefly hit $21.61 during the day. The previous low was $22.28, on Friday.

Facebook began trading publicly in mid-May following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history. But since then, investors have been concerned about its ability to keep increasing revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience. Many analysts hold positive long-term views.

Journalist pans NBC after Twitter account suspended

A British journalist slammed the US television network NBC on Monday after his Twitter account was suspended following scathing attacks on the broadcaster's delayed Olympic coverage.

The Independent's Los Angeles correspondent Guy Adams said his account was suspended as a punishment for publishing the corporate email address of Gary Zenkel, an NBC executive in charge of Olympic coverage.

Adams on Friday tweeted his outrage over NBC's decision to delay broadcasting the opening ceremony in order to catch the primetime audience.

Speaking later on Los Angeles talk radio station KNX 1070, the journalist said he was "utterly outraged" by the coverage, and accused the broadcaster of "treating the people of America with contempt".

Adams also said Twitter had bowed to pressure from the broadcaster, claiming he had not contravened their rules.

"I'm of course happy to abide by Twitter's rules, now and forever," he said in an email to Twitter. "But I don't see how I broke them in this case: I didn't publish a private email address. Just a corporate one.

"[It's] quite worrying that NBC, whose parent company are an Olympic sponsor, are apparently trying (and, in this case, succeeding) in shutting down the Twitter accounts of journalists who are critical of their Olympic coverage," he added.

NBC Sports later released a statement saying: "We filed a complaint with Twitter because a user tweeted the personal information of one of our executives," the Independent said.

Mobile Ad Network InMobi Continues Buying Spree, Picks Up Metaflow Solutions For App Distribution

metaflow logo"As a global leader in the mobile advertising space, InMobi is committed to growing the mobile ecosystem. Our acquisition of?Metaflow Solutions will help us to continue to rapidly expand the distribution?and monetisation of content for our developers and publisher partners,? Naveen Tewari, Founder and CEO at InMobi, said in a statement. Consolidation in the mobile advertising and app distribution spaces seems inevitable. InMobi is one of the larger of the independent mobile advertising companies -- its ads, it says, reach?578 million mobile consumers, in over 165 countries, through billions of ad impressions every single day -- but there are at least 4 other ad networks working at that same scale or greater. Having a better route through to where those ads might go -- that is, better targeting and placement, as well as wider placement -- is essential for a company like InMobi to compete effectively against AdMob/Google, iAd, Jumptap, Millennial Media and all the rest.

How Does Your Customer Service Measure Up? - ShuBee Business ...

Frank Blau
Contributing Writer

Gauging what customers think of you is a fundamental business duty. The card attached is part of the back cover of our job ticket forms. It is printed on perforated postcard stock, enabling the customer to tear it out and drop it in the mail. The backside is a postage-paid self-mailer. This makes it simple for customers to respond.

We generally receive between 125-150 of these replies each month, about 5% of our total customer calls. They help us monitor the job done by our telephone service employees, as well as tell us things every businessperson ought to know about his/her firm. By reading between the lines you also extract useful information about customer psychology.

Here?s a summary of some of the more important things we find out:

Price Vs. Value: Note the section that asks whether the service charge was ?More than expected?about right?less than expected?

We have never claimed to be the lowest priced shop in town. This is reflected in the fact that in the course of a year some 44% of respondents say our prices are ?more than expected,? compared with the 52% who say ?about right? and 3% ?less than expected.?

Many people think that when almost half your customers say your prices are more than expected, your business is doomed. However, note the responses we get to the next key inquiry ? ?Would you use Blau again?? Last year 87% of respondents said YES, only 4% NO, and 9% ?maybe.?

?My aching VISA card!? wrote one recent customer, who checked that the price was ?more than expected? and ?maybe? on whether he?d use us again. ?Too expensive!? went another.

We get quite a few cards where people check that we charge more than expected, but check YES for whether they?d use us again. This defies many people?s expectations. To me, it shows that people are will to pay a little more if they get good, friendly service.

Service With A Smile: ?I give Steve A-plus. I would ask for him again.? Wrote one recent respondent. ?My service man on 2-23-93 (initials B.S.) was excellent. Thank you for prompt service?Technician Larry Geurtsen was very thorough and provided excellent service??

So went some more recent responses. Note the tendency of Blau customers to pay attention to their service tech?s name. We encourage our people to ?schmooze? with customers. That is, be friendly, engage in conversation, treat them like human beings, not just money objects.

Speaking of which, what are we to make of this customer?s comment from a card returned in February ? ?(Service tech) was in my boudoir, and did not proposition me!? Sounds like that lady had a different experience with someone else.

It is my observation that if you give good service and try to be nice to people, they won?t challenge a higher price. ?Thanks for coming out so quickly,? wrote one customer. ?Would like to thank Blau for prompt consideration.? We get a lot of people commenting about how quickly we respond to calls for service. I get the feeling it?s a reaction to typical experiences with service firms that show up hours after the time they said, if at all.

Handling Complaints: We almost never get any complaints about employee appearance. It is company policy for our service techs to be neat and clean, and we enforce it.

About 1-2% of the cards we get have complaints about poor work performance or attitude on the part of our phone representatives or field technicians. That?s not a lot, but we make it a point to call each of these customers asking what we can do to make things better. We also question the employee for his/her version of events.

Most of the time it?s a minor misunderstanding. For instance, one customer recently complained about ?Phone rep somewhat pushy. Started out calling for inquiry. Felt coerced into using Blau.?

That was probably due to our policy of immediately asking people for their phone numbers when they call. Our phone reps key this into our dispatching computer work history, or establish one if it?s a new account. I can see where this might come across as too abrupt or ?pushy.? This is why we instruct our phone reps to ?schmooze? or chat with customers while they collect information.

However, the same customer who complained about our ?pushy? phone rep also took time to jot down that ?Mickey was friendly and knowledgeable. He respected my property and attempted to pick up after himself. Neater than many service men.? Oh and this customer also wrote, ?Prices high,? but ?maybe? would use us again.

For customers who are really upset about something, we will send a gift certificate to a local restaurant. Doing this brings them from thinking we are first-class jerks to okay folks.

People are People: We market our standard job tickets, including the customer respond

card, to other contractors around the country.

What I have found out from people who use them is a substantial similarity in the customer responses. Just about everyone finds 40-50% of customers responding that the prices are ?more than expected.? Likewise, close to nine out of 10 indicate they nonetheless would use the firm again.

I keep hearing from contractors around the country that they could never get away with the things we do here in Milwaukee. ?People are different around here, Frank.?

The results just cited tell me just the opposite. People are pretty much the same everywhere. They want to be treated decently and given good service. If they are, they?ll patronize your firm, even if your price is ?more than expected.?

Tracking Business: Notice that our customer reply card also tracks where calls come from. Last year about 38% of our calls came in response to Yellow Pages ads, 54% from repeat customers and 7% from referrals.

Incidentally, I offer that 54% repeat business as an answer to my critics who accuse me of being a gouger or cheat. Would that many people continue to patronize us if we didn?t give them good value for their money?

What we observe here is the power of name recognition that builds over time. People know they?ve heard of us but can?t quite remember where.

Catholic schools see marketing aid enrollment

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? After 97 years, Our Lady of Lourdes School was closing ? enrollment had dwindled to just 35 children last year at what was once one of the West Coast's biggest Catholic schools.

But with a new principal who knocked on doors, offered X Box video game consoles to kids who brought in a friend, and recruited families who lost their bid in a charter school lottery, the East Los Angeles school stayed open ? 132 pupils are registered for this fall.

Call it educational evangelism. Roman Catholic schools are seeing years of marketing efforts starting to pay off in spite of tough competition from charter schools and the lingering effects of a devastating recession.

After seeing years of relentless enrollment decline, several key dioceses across the nation saw students trickle back to their schools over the past year. They say it comes down to a cultural change in Catholic education that has taken a while to implement but is finally taking root.

"If we want to continue to survive, we have to think like a business," said Domenico Pilato, who heads the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' school marketing project.

Nationally, Catholic school enrollment is still waning ? closing 167 schools and losing 34,000 pupils over the past year. But educators say the number of schools with waiting lists increased by 171 and 34 schools opened.

The archdioceses of Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago, which have all employed aggressive marketing programs, have seen student upticks, offering hope the exodus can be turned around on a larger scale.

In Los Angeles, where enrollment had plummeted by more than 2,000 students a year for the past decade, elementary enrollment increased by 300 students last year. In Boston, the decline slowed to a 20-year low of 1 percent. Chicago, the nation's largest diocesan school system, saw city elementary enrollment increase by 8 percent.

Smaller dioceses also report gains. In Lafayette, Ind., where two schools closed in 2009, 300 new kids enrolled and plans are afoot to open an elementary school. Bridgeport, Conn., reported a 5 percent enrollment jump.

"Catholic schools are beginning to market and promote themselves," said Shane Martin, dean of education at Loyola Marymount University. "It's really about getting the word out about this option. People don't know much about it."

Schools realized the need to start marketing more aggressively some years ago, but it's been a slow shift in a conservative environment that historically never had to advertise itself.

In Los Angeles, some high school principals reluctant to take on marketing duties had to be replaced, said Monsignor Sabato Pilato, superintendent of high schools, who is Domenico's brother.

"Something different had to happen," the monsignor said.

Margaret Dames, superintendent of Bridgeport's Catholic schools, said she went through a personal learning curve. "I wasn't used to marketing," she said. "We're getting better at it."

It's a far cry from the 1960s when Catholic families flocked to parochial schools staffed mainly by priests and nuns, who earned a pittance and were renowned for wielding rulers to rap knuckles and check skirt length. Catholic school enrollment hit a high of 5.2 million in 13,000 schools during that decade.

These days, enrollment stands around 2 million in 6,800 schools that cost more to run. With religious vocations attracting few entrants, lay teachers staff 97 percent of classrooms and schools must cope with payroll, pensions and health insurance.

In more recent years, charter schools, which are autonomous publicly funded schools, have also siphoned off students in urban neighborhoods where Catholic schools once catered to European immigrants and then carved out a niche with minority pupils. Some charters even adopt uniforms resembling parochial plaids.

The rise of charters, in turn, has caused public schools to get more competitive with specialties such as magnets, small learning communities, performing arts and language programs.

"Charter schools have affected traditional public schools and private schools, particularly Catholic schools," Martin said. "There's more competition and choice than ever before."

Sister Mary Paul McCaughey, schools superintendent of the Archdiocese of Chicago, pointed to charters' main advantage over her schools: "The attraction is clearly the freebie."

Catholic school tuition averages $3,700 for elementary grades, and $8,100 for secondary, although many students receive financial aid and fees only pay for about 75 percent of costs. The tab is rounded out by the church and donations.

But Catholic educators say their philosophy of coupling solid academics with moral values yields superior results: 99 percent of students graduate and 85 percent go to college, according to the National Catholic Educational Association. The challenge has been touting those accomplishments in a tradition that values humility.

"Catholic schools have been reluctant to tell their story. It seems like boasting," said Karen Ristau, association president. "We're not particularly boasters."

That's changing. Schools have formed volunteer marketing committees, with some like Chicago and Bridgeport paying $2,500 stipends to parents who take on formal duties.

Los Angeles has one of the more sophisticated programs, which Pilato launched at the behest of his brother, who became alarmed when secondary enrollment sagged by 750 students in 2008.

Domenico Pilato, who had worked in city government outreach projects, organized each archdiocese high school to appoint a parent volunteer team to develop a marketing plan and taught them how to do it.

Now, those schools are required to employ a fulltime marketing director, employees undergo training in everything from social media to customer service, and the initiative has expanded to elementary schools.

Schools sponsor socials with preschool directors, real estate agents, and Spanish-speaking parents, and partner with youth organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and Little Leagues to host events. Kids in catechism classes get a spring break camp at a Catholic school, while parents who bring babies for baptism get a flood of information.

To compete academically, schools offer new programs with iPads, Mandarin Chinese and even a film and media school in Hollywood, as well as a 200-day school year. Most public schools have 180 days

"This is the first year we have not closed a school," said Kevin Baxter, Archodiocese of Los Angeles elementary superintendent. "People are seeing the value."

Still, schools in other places are struggling. In San Diego, where two schools have closed in as many years, Our Lady's School hovers on the brink. The school has 273 pre K-8 students, but most are low-income and cannot pay full tuition.

School President Noel Bishop tried coupons on the back of supermarket receipts. A teacher wore a sandwich-board to advertise an open house. The Virgin of Guadalupe was even incorporated in the school logo to appeal to Mexican-Americans. But the efforts, plus donations and a diocese emergency loan, have not closed the gap.

"We're trying to be forward thinking but we've seen a lot of families lose their jobs," he said.

At Our Lady of Lourdes in East Los Angeles, which back in the 1940s schooled 1,000 pupils, Principal Cori Marasco's latest hook to reel in more pre K-8 students is turning an auditorium into an indoor basketball court, paid for by foundation donations. It's part of her plan to make the school a community center in the impoverished, gang-plagued neighborhood.

"The park is known for drive-by shootings so kids don't have a place to go," she said. "They can come here ? and enroll in school, too."

Workplace Fire Safety - Health And Safety In The Workplace

Workplace Fire Safety

Workplace Fire Safety measures must be a consideration for any company whether there is an obvious source of flame or not as a situation can quickly arise where circumstances come together to cause a fire risk condition.

A workplace fire is potentially the worst disaster the can happen to a business. As well as the terrible consequences of people being killed or seriously injured in a blaze, workplace fires often wreak damage so severe and costly to repair that many of the companies where they occur go permanently out of business.

In fact, it is estimated that up to 80% of businesses never fully recover from a serious fire, and even a small fire can still result in financial losses, disruption, loss of customers and damage to its reputation.

Government statistics show that those in charge of business premises ? whether they be in offices, factories, hospitals or schools ? have a long way to go in managing the risks from fire. In 2011 there were 27,500 recorded fires in workplaces which resulted in 12 deaths and 1,200 people injured.

Therefore, it is essential that employers take steps to adequately control all fire risks at their premises. Without proper fire safety measures in place, everyone at work and others who may be in the location, are at risk of being injured or killed as a result of a fire.

There are a wide range of work activities and materials that have the potential to cause a workplace fire. For example, discarded smokers? materials and sparks from welding or machinery can cause materials such as waste paper or solvents to ignite while faulty electrical equipment, damaged cables or overloaded electrical sockets can also be a source of ignition.

However, both the risk of fire occurring and the human and financial cost can be significantly reduced, or even eliminated, providing business owners take adequate precautions. This means identifying, assessing and reducing workplace fire risks, providing adequate fire safety measures and equipment and having a plan in place to deal with any emergencies.

Breaches of Fire Safety Law are now increasing as Fire Services routinely inspect premises after a fire, whether a small or large fire, and a business could be fined for not producing a risk assessment, blocked or non-operational fire exits and excessive storage of combustible items. So the need to ensure that workplace fire safety measures have been taken is a paramount need of any business owner of they want to avoid not only fines and a possible prison sentence, but also the loss of their whole business and possibly their whole livelihood.

WABASH, INDIANA?A compelling exhibit featuring photographic portraits of children in need of adoptive families, the Indiana Heart Gallery, is stopping by Wabash Alliance Church in Wabash August 5 - 12.? The Indiana Department of Child Services uses the Heart Gallery to help raise awareness about the approximately 300 Hoosier children currently in foster care still in need of a forever home.

?

?All children want a home filled with love and a family with whom they can share their birthdays and celebrate holidays.? They want a room with their own toys, to have friends, play sports and participate in after-school activities.? Most importantly, they want a loving, supportive family to be there for them as they grow up,? noted DCS Director James Payne.? ?The children featured in the Heart Gallery are no exception.? They just need a little help from all of us in finding that forever family.?

?

Using the talents of professional photographers who volunteer their time, the individual spirit and true personality of each child is captured.? Heart Gallery photographs sometimes show shy children wrapped in their security blankets, girls dressed up as princesses, boys hugging dogs and siblings laughing together.? The children all have one thing in common:? they need and deserve families that will give them unconditional love.?

?

About 408,000 children live in foster care in the United States.? More than 100,000 are legally available for adoption and in need of adoptive families.? Many of these children are older, in sibling groups that want to be adopted together or have special needs.?

?

This year, approximately 20,000 young people will leave the foster care system without lifelong families?most at age 18.? On their own, these young adults must navigate a weakened economy offering fewer jobs and less support for vital services such as housing.? They need and deserve caring adults who love and support them.? For some foster kids, getting adopted can mean the difference between homelessness or incarceration and transitioning successfully to adulthood.

?

The Indiana Heart Gallery will display 11 portraits beginning Sunday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 12 at Wabash Alliance Church, 1200 North Cass St. in Wabash.?? Viewing from 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.? Viewing from 9 am to 1 pm on Sundays.? No viewing on Saturday, August 11.? There is no charge to see the exhibit.? ?

Facebook's stock tumbles after 1st public quarter

(AP) ? Facebook's first earnings report as a public company had solid numbers, but in the end it landed with a thud ? much like its rocky initial public offering two months ago.

Facebook reported stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers Thursday. But investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, its stock fell more than 10 percent, or $2.74, to $24.10 in after-hours trading. The decline means Facebook's stock will most likely open at its lowest level since going public.

It's another big disappointment for the Harvard-born company that was supposed to usher in the next Internet boom.

"They didn't break any banks," said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer. "They did not come out any better than anybody had expected."

What may have rattled investors is that Facebook's revenue growth has slowed. Between 2009 to 2010, the company's revenue nearly tripled. In the first quarter of this year, revenue climbed 44 percent. In the second quarter, Facebook Inc.'s revenue increased 32 percent to $1.18 billion from $895 million a year earlier. Analysts, on average had expected slightly lower revenue of $1.16 billion, according to FactSet.

For a freshly public company such as Facebook, the decelerating revenue growth is a concern. A bet on fast-growing revenue is the reason investors are willing to value new companies highly even if they are not making a profit. Another reason jittery investors may be even more nervous: Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, the number of people who access Facebook regularly inched closer to 1 billion. The company said it had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year earlier. At the end of the first quarter, it had 901 million users.

Overall the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company posted a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share in the April-June period, mainly due to compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago. The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

The results come two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq stock market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Though Facebook had a lot riding on its first public report, Wall Street's outlook was muted, which could be another reason for the stock's decline.

"People are waiting for a really huge growth moment in revenue, advertising, dollars per user," said Alex Ashby, research analyst at Global X Funds, a provider of a social media exchange-traded fund. "People had expected that Facebook is going to revolutionize advertising...we think it's still a definite possibility, but maybe further down the road."

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ?even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

Keeping Long Distance Love Alive | MEET WOMAN | HOW TO ...

How to meet women online- A sociable course to approach an attractive girlfriend is to cause them to chase after you

Is it possible to keep long distance love alive? Many people find this love hard to maintain. But all types of relationships are not also easy to maintain as they need one to be committed in maintaining them.

Long distance relationships have become more common nowadays as the Internet has brought folk together irrespective of how far partners are staying from one another.

It can be very tough and confusing times when you?re in a long distance relationship love. It takes much work for long distance relationships to function well when it comes to compromising, understanding and communicating.

Due to this folk think that long distance relationships don?t work. Although a large number of long distance relationships fail, it does not mean that yours will also fail if you get yourself into it. You can make yours to work if you put a little more effort and planning well.

There are numerous benefits of being in a long distance love which many people don?t realize. You will not waste time doubting your lover if you know how fortunate you are to have him/her willing to be in a relationship with you in spite of the distance.

Long distance relationship involves two folk sharing the same interest and that same interest is love. They care for one another that their love keeps on growing stronger in spite of the long distance between them.

Long distance love requires a special understanding and willingness because there are tests in such a relationship compared with other types of relationships. For instance cheating on girlfriend..

Distance is the most difficult thing for partners to deal with in a long distance relationship. But with Internet they can spend time together by playing cards or any other internet game. They can also use Skype to talk whatever they want.

Partners can also rent the same movie to watch when they have spare time. After watching it they can then talk about it over the phone. They can even buy electronic gifts like e-cards for each other. Therefore there are unlimited things that partners can do over the internet in enduring their long distance relationship.

Effective communication is one of the most important things when it comes to making long distance relationship work. Both of the partners should feel that they are an active part of each other?s life.

Feeling to be an active part of one another?s life is the best achievement towards having effective communication. Pictures, emails, web cams and letters can diminish distance but nothing of these substitutes the intimacy of hearing your spouse?s voice.

Since partners cannot be together physically, swapping photos will keep them in remembering how their partners look like. When you are feeling lonely the photos of your partner will remind you that you have someone special in your life.

Partners in the long distance love might find it hard to trust each other. This is because they are going to have a hard time in believing what folk gossip about their relationship and what they tell each about the same.

Long distance relationship is in danger when trust and honesty is lacking. There will be a strong long distance relationship if both partners are trustful and faithful.

What you need to recognize about paid surveys online

Posted on July 27th, 2012 by Nedra Simmons

    by Nedra Simmons

Normally a company is always keen to understand what consumers want and to be able to know, they often hire a secondary firm to get the opinions of consumers. Paid surveys online are usually the solution to this.

Companies use paid surveys to further improve their business orders. Paid surveys online can offer surveyed consumers various rewards which are not always only cash. Participants may be permitted to provide their survey online in return for products, discounts or to have their name submitted to a variety of paid surveys cash drawings.

There are many places that you will find paid surveys and the most accessible would be over the internet; paid surveys are actually there to benefit not just the company which commissioned the survey but also those who participate. But be warned seeing as there are sites that will charge a subscriber for information on paid survey programs online that can be found in other places that would actually cost you nothing.

Some participants rely on paid surveys to help them in their family obligations or even to acquire enough funds for an item they wish to purchase for themselves.

You might think that paid survey programs online are just too good to be true and even though this may be correct in some ways, you will find one or two paid survey websites which have superior reputation and you can rely on them for your success.

The profile you submitted is very important if you need to participate in paid surveys. Firms in charge of picking individuals to participate in paid survey programs look at their profiles seeing to it they?re going to fit the required survey. By keeping an up-to-date profile the actual numbers of paid surveys which may be available to you will certainly increase.

Prices of Facebook stock since long-awaited IPO

Facebook's stock fell 8.5 percent during the regular session Thursday, then dropped further in extended trading after the company reported quarterly earnings for the first time as a public company.

The stock has been up on 20 trading days and down on 28 since its initial public offering.

Facebook began trading publicly in mid-May following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history. The IPO priced at $38, at the top of a projected range that Facebook had already boosted just days earlier.

Although many investors had hoped for a big first-day pop, Facebook's stock opened on May 18 at $42.05 and fluctuated between $45 and $38 throughout the day. It closed barely above its IPO price, at $38.23.

The stock had fallen sharply in the weeks following the IPO, going as low as $25.52.

Investors have been concerned about its ability to keep increasing revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, though many analysts hold positive long-term opinions.

The company, along with the investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of dozens of shareholder lawsuits. They allege that analysts at the large underwriting investment banks cut their financial forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO and told only a handful of clients. Facebook and the banks overseeing the IPO insist that nothing about its IPO process was illegal or even out of the ordinary.

Phil Stutz, M.D.: Design for Loving: A Killer in Business, a Disaster in Love

Amanda was a fashionista, struggling to launch her own clothing line. In her early 20s, razor-thin, and strikingly dressed, she certainly looked the part.

In business Amanda was, in her own words, "a killer," with a strong sense of entitlement, the sort of patient who is surprised when I ask her not to take calls on her cellphone during a session. Unfortunately, Amanda behaved with the same demanding selfishness in her romantic life.

On the face of it, Amanda's boyfriend Blake was the perfect partner for Amanda and her volatile moods. Blake was handsome, refined, easygoing and had his own strong sense of self (he was a successful medical researcher). They'd been together four months -- a long-term commitment by Amanda's standards -- but they were in the middle of a make-or-break fight when she came to see me.

The quarrel began at a party where Blake ignored Amanda and spent the evening talking to another woman. Enraged, Amanda took him to task on the ride home -- but Blake defended himself. He hated these parties she dragged him to where she trawled for backers for her new company. So what if he'd found someone he enjoyed talking with and had a good time for once?

By the time they reached home they were no longer speaking. But Amanda was still thinking -- and all her thoughts were about the injustice she'd just gone through. Like a broken record, her mind repeated justifications for her rage and hatched plans for revenge -- like sleeping with a GQ model she knew. She stayed awake all night compiling a litany of everything about Blake she couldn't stand, from his favorite sweater to the way he cleared his throat.

"Have you had this kind of reaction with previous boyfriends?" I asked her.

"Only when they deserved it," Amanda shot back, and burst into tears.

It turned out every one of her relationships had ended the same way. After a couple of months (or even weeks) the guy would do something to offend Amanda that she'd escalate in her head. "I can't love the person any more. I can't even stand to be in the same room with them. My friends call it my 'point of no return.'"

Amanda's rages affected her business ambitions too. She'd already screamed at a buyer for a major department store over a series of perceived slights, lost the order and spent months trying to woo him back.

In each situation, it didn't matter if Amanda was right or wrong. Her problem was that she'd reach a state of obsession with the person who'd "mistreated" her. It was as if the person had moved into her head and pitched a tent. While she fixated on how badly they'd acted, and how she'd even the score, life was passing her by.

We call this state the "maze" because once you're in it, it's almost impossible to free yourself. Amanda was an extreme case, but everyone, even the calmest and most rational among us, gets trapped in the maze. We're led there by a universal human expectation that the world will treat us fairly. This is the fantasy of a child. When the scales of justice don't get balanced on the spot, it leaves us in a private hell of rage and retribution.

There's only one way out of this trap; we need to live by a principle more powerful than fairness. We need to accept other human beings in the condition they're actually in -- especially when their behavior offends us. The force that creates this acceptance is love. But it's not easy to love someone when your natural inclination is to hate and hurt them.

This kind of love isn't the result of changing your opinion about them; it's love you generate despite your opinion. That requires a tool. We call it "active love" because it takes effort, but the beneficiary of this effort is you. When you fully accept someone as they are, you have no further expectations of them -- only then are you freed from the maze. You can begin to live again.

London ready to fight off Olympic hack attacks

LONDON (Reuters) - Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, the fastest men in the world, storm over the line together in the 100-metres final of the London Olympics - a photo finish.

As they eagerly look up for the result, a political message from a rouge hacking group fills the screen as the world looks on in disbelief.

While unlikely, the task of ensuring the unthinkable does not happen falls to the Games' IT services provider Atos.

Analysts say infiltrating the scoring and timing systems at one of the 35 competition venues around Britain, especially the Olympic stadium in east London, is a target for hackers looking to spread political messages, known as 'hacktivists', and criminal gangs looking to cash in on the Games.

"The digital systems recording scores and timings are susceptible to attack and will be targeted by hacktivists wanting to make a statement and by organised crime groups looking to profit from betting on events," said a former UK government cyber security boss who wished to remain nameless.

"Can you imagine the furore if the 100-metres final is a photo finish and they can't access the photo and no one knows when the clock stopped."

At the 2008 Beijing Games, around 12 million potential cyber attacks - varying in type and potency - were successfully defended each day but over the last four years the scams and cyber campaigns perpetrated by hackers have grown in scale and complexity.

Paris-based Atos, the lead technology company for the Olympics since 2002, expects up to 14 million possible attacks every day during the London games.

Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of eEye Digital Security and a former hacker who was raided by the FBI when he was 17, said the Olympics was a prime target.

"I think this year even more so, given what's been happening recently in the hacktivist and related community," he said.

Hacktivists mount attacks to highlight political or social causes, and analysts say they are seen as more likely to target the Games than state-backed hackers.

"Hacktivist groups like LulzSec and Anonymous will want to go after the Olympics to make a point because it would give them an immediate worldwide audience for their social and political messages," said a cyber security consultant for the Games who did not want to be named.

"States involved in such attacks would not want to get caught targeting the Olympics as they could be banned and disgraced."

    'ETHICAL HACKERS'

Atos, which expects to handle about two million pieces of key data throughout the event - a third more than at Beijing - has carried out more than 200,000 hours of testing, including simulating cyber attacks from so-called 'ethical hackers' invited to join the tests.

The company, which is responsible for some 11,500 computers and servers across Britain, will monitor possible cyber threats second by second from its Olympic Technology Operations Centre in east London's Canary Wharf business district.

It is protecting the systems that will deliver results to scoreboards at Olympic venues, event timetables to athletes, and Olympic accreditation information to UK border officials.

"It would be quite complicated to get into this network without being detected," said Atos' executive vice president Patrick Adiba. "I can never be 100 percent, but it is close to 100 percent."

If the main Olympic systems prove to be impregnable hackers could instead target transport infrastructure, financial operations or its top corporate sponsors.

Visa, for example, is the Olympics' only approved credit supplier and has a monopoly on all of the cash dispensing machines around the Olympic sites.

"Take down the Visa network and no one is buying or selling anything. The potential for damage and loss of revenue is vast," the cyber consultant said.

Maiffret said companies needed to plan for any cyber attacks that get through the defences.

"When you try to respond to a hack after the fact, and you are trying to create your plan as it's happening, that can be disastrous," he said.

Organisers are also wary of the threat from powerful computer viruses, such as 'Flame' and 'Shady RAT'.

Flame, which is capable of espionage and sabotaging computer systems, was likely used to attack Iran in April, while Shady RAT - a virus that persistently attacks computers and individual users - targeted the International Olympic Committee and four Olympic bodies in recent years.

Earlier this year MI5 chief Jonathan Evans said cyber attacks against the British government and businesses had reached "astonishing levels" and that the London Games would be an "attractive target" for cyber criminals.

Britain's minister responsible for cyber terrorism, Francis Maude, warned in May that the Olympics would "not be immune to cyber-attacks", given the hundreds of hotels, training centres and related facilities being used by athletes, coaches, Games officials and dignitaries during the Games.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games'(LOCOG) will hope the $750 million it has spent on technology is enough to protect the Games.

UN pitches roadmap to relocate Iran exiles in Iraq

The UN said it has a "roadmap" to resolve a dispute between Iraq and a group of Iranian exiles, but a senior official warned that Baghdad would act if there was no resolution to the row.

About 1,200 members of the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, opposed to the regime in Tehran, have refused to move from their camp north of the Iraqi capital despite a UN-brokered accord with the government to leave as a first step toward finding homes in other countries.

The exiles cite broken promises by Baghdad as the reason for their staying put.

On Thursday, the UN mission in Iraq said it had presented a roadmap to the Iraqi government and Ashraf residents "that suggests a series of steps to complete the peaceful relocation of residents to Camp Hurriyah (Liberty)."

It called on Ashraf residents to "start the preparations for the next move without delay" and for Baghdad to "be generous when it comes to the humanitarian needs of the residents and to continue to seek a peaceful solution to this issue under any circumstances."

The UN said in a statement that the roadmap "outlines preparations to be made and a step-by-step approach for the relocation."

It also addresses issues such as water and power supply and other humanitarian needs, the statement said without giving full details of the roadmap.

However Shahin Gobadi, spokesman for the exiled opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran, dismissed the roadmap as "an obvious attempt to compel the (Ashraf) residents to relinquish their humanitarian needs."

The Paris-based group said it had sent letters to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday complaining that "minimum humanitarian needs" are not being met in Camp Hurriyah.

A senior official in Baghdad told AFP that the government would act "responsibly to protect the sovereignty and security of Iraq" if a resolution is not reached to the impasse.

About 1,800 inhabitants have moved to the new camp near Baghdad and several deadlines to completely empty Camp Ashraf have passed.

The remainder have refused to move, citing inhuman conditions at the new camp and broken promises on the part of the Iraqi government with regards to the quality of the camp.

Earlier this month, the US government said the Iranian exiles must leave the camp if they are to be removed from Washington's terror blacklist.

The People's Mujahedeen was founded in the 1960s to oppose the Shah of Iran, but took up arms against the country's new clerical rulers after the Islamic revolution of 1979.

The group, which has been on the US terror blacklist since 1997, says it has renounced violence and has asked Washington to remove it from its list of terrorist organisations.
